men get it too...

well... It is breast cancer awareness month, and since my mom is a survivor, and I have a friend who has a lump she wont get checked out.. grrrr.. It seems only fitting that I speak up on the subject. My mom had a total masectomy on one side, and then the reconstruction, and for years, she wouldn't hesitate to pull up her shirt and show you first her flat chested side, and then her reconstructed breast with no nipple. She thought it was ugly, and The whole ordeal really took something away from her personality that can never be gotten back. But I think its beautiful. She survived. She fought the good fight, and she kicked cancers ass and I am thankful that she is still here to love me, and my children another, day, week, year. My friend, on the other hand, I certainly wish she would get herself taken care of, because its hard to get attached to, or stay attached to someone who might not be here in a year or two.. But all that said. Its important that folks know, pink is great.. its awesome to hink pink, and fight like a girl, and all that good stuff.. BUt the fact is.. Men get it too.. Not as often but it does exist and my heart goes out to thise men who not only are going through a cancer battle, but also going through one that such a feminine orientation, I cant imagine what a man must go through when he get a diagnosis of breast cancer and is not only fighting cancer, but probably feeling a need to defend his masculinity. It may strip a woman of a breast, but I am kind of thinking the struggle a man with breast cancer goes through must be doubled because no one talks about male breast cancer, everything breast cancer related is geared toward women. maybe it would be a nice idea to gear some of that awareness towards the more masculine gender and let them know you dont have to be a girl to get our support.. We are aware that Men get it too and we are not gender bias in our support..
